Go With the Original
If you are going to get in to tie dying you might as well get the most well known book on the subject. Tie Dye! The How-to Book (pictured at right) has been a standard since its first publication and continues to lead the industry. It provides step by step instructions, full color photos and offers a resource for getting the highes quality dyes. I started with this one and I actually still have a copy floating around somewhere. If you are looking for the basics with the opportunity to learn a little bit of the 'cool stuff' then this is it. For under $10 it is a great bargain filled with a lot of very useful information.
Tie Dying with the Stars
If you have a good handle on the basics and are looking for a challenge, How to Tie Dye Stars: Book 2 of the Tie Dye Art Series (pictured at right) will get you where you need to be. Tie dying a star is one of the more difficult patterns to master and the expert author, Richard W. Rogers walks you through the process from start to finish. An aspiring (and now accomplished) artist, Rogers has been tie dying fr over 30 years and brings a lot of great tips, tricks and tie dye patterns tricks to the table.
Shibori Tie Dye Patterns
For those of you looking to get in to the Japanese art of Shibori, this book is the original and the best. I was really in to this form of tie dying for over a year and found it very interesting and artistically satisfying. The Japanese culture takes this form of fabric dying very seriously and contained within this book are some of the best tie dye patterns I have ever seen. Not only do you get great tie dye patterns, you also get a lot of history on this art form and how it integrates in to Japanese culture. Batik Tie Dye Patterns
If you are looking to get in to the highly specialized and beautiful Batik form of tie dye then this is your book. Indonesian tie dye has been around for centuries and this book gives you many beautiful pictures and step by step instructions. The tie dye patterns contained withing this book are some of the most beautiful and challenging I have seen. If you are able to master these you can master anything within this art form. If you are up for truly challenging and fulfilling tie dye patterns than this is your book.
